Some cities celebrate summer quietly. Porto does not.
By late June, the city is already preparing for São João. Colourful bunting stretches across narrow streets, music drifts through historic squares and conversations linger long after sunset. Along the Douro, terraces fill with locals and visitors making the most of the season’s longest days.
June 21 marks the summer solstice — and this is our guide to making the most of it.
FOZ DO DOURO · JUNE 20
The longest day begins the evening before.
As the sun lowers over the river, make your way towards Foz do Douro, where the Douro meets the Atlantic.
Find a place along the waterfront and watch the city shift into its evening rhythm. The light softens, the ocean breeze arrives and Porto begins to slow.
Or stay closer to the historic centre and wander through Ribeira and Miragaia, where preparations for São João are already underway. Decorations hang overhead, neighbourhood restaurants spill onto the pavement and the city feels ready for celebration.
Either way, the evening is best enjoyed without a plan for what comes next.
The next morning comes early.
SERRALVES · JUNE 21, MORNING
Begin the longest day slowly.
Make coffee before you leave — there is a reason your apartment has a kitchen.
From Santa Catarina House, Flores 200 House or São Miguel House, step outside while the city is still finding its rhythm and make your way towards Serralves.
Spend time with the exhibitions before wandering through the gardens. Tree-lined paths, sculptures and quiet corners create a welcome contrast to the energy of the city.
Take your time. The morning is still yours.

Continue towards Cedofeita and Miguel Bombarda.
Independent galleries, bookshops, speciality coffee shops and neighbourhood wine bars sit side by side, creating one of Porto’s most rewarding districts to explore on foot.
Just beyond the doors of Flores 200 House, Porto reveals one of its most creative sides.
There is no need for a destination. Simply keep walking.
AIR RACE AIRINVICTUS · DOURO WATERFRONT
By afternoon, Porto’s attention turns to the sky.
Air Race AirInvictus takes place along the Douro waterfront, bringing together aerial displays and one of the city’s most anticipated events of the summer.
Find a place along Ribeira, Cais de Gaia or Jardim do Morro and look up.
As aircraft sweep above the river, the city becomes part of the spectacle.
SUMMER NIGHTS IN PORTO
As the afternoon gives way to evening, head towards Jardim do Morro or Virtudes.
As the sun begins to set, Porto’s granite façades take on a golden glow. Few places capture the city at its best quite like this.
Then cross to Vila Nova de Gaia and end the day at WOW.
Order a glass of wine and watch the lights appear across Ribeira and the Dom Luís I Bridge. Stay a little longer than planned.
The evening ends as it began — slowly, by the river.
Porto’s relationship with summer has never been subtle. The city celebrates loudly, generously and long into the night.
