THE LONGEST DAY IN ISTANBUL

Sunset view of the Hagia Sophia and surrounding minarets in Istanbul, showcasing historical architecture and vibrant colors.

Every city keeps time differently. In Istanbul, the longest day is not measured in hours — it is measured in layers. A city built across two continents, where history sits at street level and the light off the Bosphorus changes everything it touches.

June 21 is the summer solstice — the longest day of the year, and also International Music Day. In Istanbul, it feels inevitable. This is our guide to making the most of it.

NEOLOKAL  ·  SALT GALATA, BANKALAR CADDESİ

Modern restaurant interior with elegant tables, glass windows, and a bright, inviting atmosphere. Perfect for dining.

The longest day begins the evening before. Make a reservation at Neolokal — on the top floor of SALT Galata, looking out over the Golden Horn and the old city beyond. Chef Maksut Aşkar’s kitchen holds a Michelin Star and a Green Star for Sustainable Gastronomy, the first restaurant in Turkey to earn both. The menu is a love letter to Anatolia: ancient grains, forgotten ingredients, and techniques passed down through generations. Order slowly.

Outside the windows, the Süleymaniye Mosque glows against the evening sky. Saturday, well spent. Tomorrow belongs to the city.

The evening is best enjoyed without a plan for what comes next. The next morning comes early.

MORNINGS IN PERA  ·  BEYOĞLU

June 21 — Morning

Breakfast spread with olives, cheese, and bread in a quaint street cafe, surrounded by historic buildings and people walking.

Begin the longest day slowly. Guests staying at Ando Living Taksim House will find Mornings in Pera just a short walk away. Take a table and order the breakfast plate: Hatay olives, local white cheese, homemade jam, fresh vegetables, and the essential Istanbul simit — the sesame-crusted bread ring that has been sold on these streets for centuries. A slow breakfast here is not a meal. It is a way of reading the neighbourhood.

Watch Beyoğlu wake up at its own pace. There is nowhere else to be.

PERA’S CULTURAL CIRCUIT  ·  BEYOĞLU

June 21 — Late Morning

A short walk from breakfast, Beyoğlu holds more culture per block than almost anywhere else in the city. The options are yours to choose between — or combine.

PERA MUSEUM  ·  TEPEBAŞİ

Housed in a beautifully restored late-19th-century building, Pera Museum’s permanent collection moves between Ottoman-era paintings, Anatolian artefacts, and Kütahya tiles — alongside a rotating programme of international exhibitions. A quiet hour here is one of the most civilised things you can do on a Sunday morning.

SALT BEYOĞLU  ·  İSTİKLAL CADDESİ

On İstiklal Caddesi, SALT Beyoğlu is the neighbourhood’s contemporary art and research space — sister to SALT Galata where you dined the evening before. Free entry. Worth a look.

AKBANK SANAT  ·  YAPI KREDİ KÜLTÜR MERKEZİ

Two more cultural spaces sit within easy walking distance on İstiklal: Akbank Sanat and Yapı Kredi Kültür Merkezi, both running changing exhibitions and occasional performances. Check what is showing — on International Music Day, one of them usually has something worth stepping inside for.

SALON İKSV  ·  NECATİBEY CADDESİ

The Istanbul Music Festival runs through June — and Salon İKSV, the foundation’s dedicated concert venue, is only minutes away. Check the programme at iksv.org. On the longest day of the year, live music before lunch is not an indulgence. It is appropriate.

MAHİR LOKANTASI  ·  PERA

June 21 — 1:00pm

For lunch, Mahir Lokantası. Bib Gourmand in the 2026 Michelin Guide — the Guide’s quiet endorsement of a place that has never needed one. Traditional Turkish cooking served without ceremony: slow-cooked meats, seasonal vegetables, bread that arrives warm. Our favourite: the içli köfte — hand-rolled bulgur shells filled with spiced minced meat, a dish that takes all morning to prepare and disappears in minutes. The kind of food that requires nothing beyond hunger and a good appetite.

KONTRA PLAK  ·  TOMTOM MAHALLESİ

June 21 — Afternoon

Vinyl records on display in a music store with 'Now Playing' sign and two DJs engaged in a live session.

Before heading into Çukurcuma, one stop is non-negotiable. Kontra Plak, across from Galatasaray Lisesi, is not simply a record shop — it is the only place in Turkey to appear on Dua Lipa’s global Google Maps recommendation list, one of 130 locations she handpicked across the world. Run the albums through your fingers: old vinyl alongside new releases, jazz next to Turkish folk next to electronic. On International Music Day, there is no more fitting place to pause.

ÇUKURCUMA  ·  BEYOĞLU

June 21 — Afternoon

Charming street scene with historic buildings, lush greenery, and pedestrians enjoying a sunny day. Urban exploration.

Continue down Yeniçarşı Caddesi into Çukurcuma — the neighbourhood where Istanbul keeps its memory. Antique dealers, old maps, vintage furniture, and objects that have survived too many owners to be easily categorised. Take your time.

MASUMIYET MÜZESİ  ·  ÇUKURCUMA CADDESİ

At the heart of Çukurcuma stands the Museum of Innocence — Orhan Pamuk’s singular creation, part novel, part museum, entirely Istanbul. Based on his novel of the same name, the museum collects the objects of an imaginary love story set across the city in the 1970s: cigarette stubs, earrings, salt shakers, cinema tickets. Each case is a chapter. The Netflix adaptation brought the story to a new audience; the museum remains the only place to feel it properly.

Then follow Boğazkesen Caddesi for its galleries — small, independent spaces showing work that does not ask to be explained.

KASIMPAŞA MEVLEVİHANESİ

June 21 — 5:00pm

Whirling Dervishes perform traditional Sufi dance, showcasing spirituality and cultural heritage in an elegant setting.

Take a taxi across the Golden Horn to the Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi. This is the heart of the programme — and fitting for a day dedicated to music and light.

The Mevlevî Âyin-i Şerifi is performed here: a sema ceremony accompanied by the ney, the kudüm, and the voices of the musicians. The semazens turn. The white robes open like flowers. It is one of the few experiences in Istanbul that renders the city entirely quiet inside you. The ceremony begins at 17:00. Book in advance.

GALLADA & TOPSIDE BAR  ·  THE PENINSULA ISTANBUL

June 21 — 8:00pm

Return to your apartment to change. Then make your way to Gallada & Topside Bar at The Peninsula Istanbul, perched above the city with Galata Tower in full view. On the longest evening of the year, the sun sets at 8:41pm — and from Topside Bar, you will watch it descend over the Bosphorus from above.

Chef Fatih Tutak’s kitchen below celebrates the flavours of the Silk Road. The bar above celebrates everything else. Order slowly. The light disappears gradually, and then all at once.

Istanbul has never needed a reason to stay awake. It was built on two continents, on top of a hundred cities, at the crossing of every route that ever mattered. Tonight is the longest night of the year. The city will not notice.

Summer has officially begun.
