7 Hills, 7 Dishes: A Culinary Journey Through Istanbul

Istanbul, both a city of history and flavor, is famously built on seven hills, each offering its own unique perspective of this vibrant metropolis. Just as the city’s skyline is defined by its seven hills, its culinary scene is equally diverse and rich. From sizzling street food to time-honored Ottoman recipes, here are 7 must-try dishes to experience the true taste of Istanbul.

Each bite tells the story of this timeless city:

Kebap

Istanbul is famous for its kebab culture. Adana kebap and Urfa kebap are two of the most popular types. The meat is mixed with spices, skewered, and grilled. It’s usually served with lavash or pide bread.

Simit

A typical Istanbul street food, simit is a crispy, sesame-crusted bread that’s often eaten with Turkish tea. It’s a popular snack or light breakfast choice and can be found at street vendors around the city and bakeries.

Balık Ekmek

A must-try for seafood lovers, it is a freshly grilled or fried fish sandwich, typically served with onions, rocket, and tomatoes. The best places to enjoy it are near the Galata Bridge and other waterfront spots.

Lahmacun

Often referred to as “Turkish pizza” lahmacun is a thin flatbread topped with minced meat, onion, tomato paste and spices. It’s usually served with a side of parsley, onion, and a squeeze of lemon. It’s delicious when rolled up and eaten on the go.
