Istanbul in 72 Hours: Your Ultimate Guide to the City’s Best Sights

Skyline of Istanbul with the historic Suleymaniye Mosque under a clear blue sky.

We’ve chosen Ando Living Gümüşsuyu House as our home base for this getaway – not just for its prime location between Taksim Square and Dolmabahçe Palace, but also for the unique sense of calm and coziness. Nestled on a hillside with stunning views of the Bosphorus and the historic peninsula, it offers a peaceful yet central starting point for exploring both the old and modern sides of Istanbul. Many of the city’s major attractions are just a short walk, tram, or taxi ride away.

Here’s how to make the most of 72 hours in Istanbul:

Day 1 – Exploring Old Istanbul: History and Culture

Morning
Start your journey from Gümüşsuyu and head toward the historic heart of the city. A quick ride from Ando Living Gümüşsuyu House will take you to Sultanahmet, where you’ll explore some of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks:

  • Hagia Sophia: An iconic structure in Istanbul that showcases a stunning blend of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. It has served as a church, and now is a mosque, and remains a major cultural and historical landmark.
  • Blue Mosque: Famous for its beautiful blue tiles and towering minarets, this is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
  • Basilica Cistern: The mystical underground world of this ancient cistern, where you can marvel at its beauty and serenity.

Lunch
After wandering through the Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı), head to Pandeli Restaurant inside the market.
It’s a beloved spot for traditional Turkish dishes served in a historic setting. Perfect for a taste of Istanbul’s culinary history!

Afternoon
One of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, the Grand Bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı) is the perfect place to pick up unique souvenirs, handcrafted carpets, or sweet treats like Turkish delight, all while experiencing the true spirit of Istanbul.

Evening
Take a scenic walk across Galata Bridge, watching the sunset and local fishermen. Then, head up to Galata Tower for stunning panoramic views over the city. For a pre-dinner drink, stop by the stylish Georges Hotel Galata rooftop bar with breathtaking views of the Bosphorus, before finishing your night with a delicious meal at Karaköy Lokantası. In many traditional restaurants, sharing dishes is common, trying a bit of everything. Meals can last a while. Don’t be surprised if meals start late or stretch into long conversations

After dinner, your peaceful apartment in Gümüşsuyu awaits, offering a perfect rest for the next day.

Day 2 – Taksim, İstiklal Avenue & Galataport

Morning
After having your power breakfast and enjoying your coffee on your terrasse overseeing the Bosphorus, start your day with a short walk from your Ando apartment to Taksim Square which is the lively heart of Istanbul.

From here, stroll down İstiklal Avenue, a lively pedestrian street full of art galleries, shops, and cafes.

  • Pera Museum: A short walk from Taksim, the Pera Museum is a great place to see both Ottoman and contemporary art. If you’re lucky, there might even be a unique temporary exhibition going on.
  • Salt Galata: Modern art lovers will enjoy Salt Galata, where you’ll find cutting-edge exhibitions and installations.
If you’re into art, İstiklal Avenue and its surrounding areas offer a vibrant contemporary art scene, with many galleries regularly presenting temporary exhibitions.

Lunch
Head to Galataport, this vibrant waterfront area, for lunch. With its fantastic Bosphorus views and a variety of dining options, it’s the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy a delicious meal. While you’re there, take some time to explore the shopping options — Galataport is home to a range of boutiques, international brands, and local designers, making it a great place to pick up something special.

Afternoon
After lunch, dive into Istanbul’s modern art scene at Istanbul Modern, located in Karaköy. Here, you’ll find contemporary exhibitions by both Turkish and international artists.

Evening
Head back to your Ando Living Home for a relaxing night in. You can enjoy the Bosphorus view from your balcony, letting the day gently wind down.

Day 3 – Bosphorus Tour & Bebek

Morning
Walk or take a quick ride to nearby Kabataş or Beşiktaş to board a Bosphorus cruise. This scenic boat ride is the best way to take in Istanbul’s skyline, passing palaces, mosques, and waterfront mansions that stretch between Europe and Asia.

Lunch
After your tour, head to Bebek, one of Istanbul’s most elegant neighborhoods. Dine at Paraliaki, a stylish Mediterranean seafood restaurant right by the water, known for its fresh daily catch, calamari, and seasonal mezze.

Afternoon
Take a peaceful walk along the Bosphorus to Arnavutköy, famous for its colorful wooden houses and quiet charm. From there, continue to Ortaköy, a lively spot where you can sip tea by the water, browse local craft stalls, and try kumpir — a loaded baked potato, beloved by locals.

Evening
Return to Ando Living Gümüşsuyu House for your final evening and with a just short stroll, head to BİZ, the rooftop restaurant of the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) in Taksim for a memorable farewell dinner. With sweeping views over the Bosphorus and refined dishes blending Turkish and global flavors, it’s a stunning way to end your trip.
