Inside the Design with Carolina Grave

Designers working with fabric swatches and blueprints for Inside the Design by The Ando Edit and Carolina Grave.

Hi, can you tell us your name and your role at Ando Living?

Hi, my name is Carolina Grave, and I’m a Project Manager on the Interior Design team. I’m super excited to tell you a bit more about one of my projects – Abrantes 48 House – that will be opening very very soon, in the vibrant Santos neighborhood.

What makes the design of the Abrantes 48 House special?

It’s a historical building dating back to 1851, and the flat retains its period charm with large windows, iron balconies, and a tiled façade. One of the features that stands out is the incredibly high ceilings, which we preserved in their original form, as they add a sense of grandiosity. Additionally, the view of the Tagus River elevates the overall living experience.

What was your inspiration for the design of the Abrantes 48 House?

The Tejo River was a primary source of inspiration. The iconic blue tiles on the building’s façade quickly made us realize that incorporating blue into the interiors would create a seamless connection between the building and its surroundings.

Are there any signature materials or fabrics you used, and what drew you to them?

For this project, we focused on materials that echoe the natural beauty of the surroundings. We selected fabrics and textures that are both luxurious and durable, with an emphasis on materials like pele de tigre stone, a well-known Portuguese material. These choices help ground the space in a sense of place while remaining modern and timeless.

When designing a new project such as the Abrantes 48 House, what’s your usual approach?

Our approach is to integrate the essence of the neighborhood into the design.
Together with Margarida Feio, our design partner for the buildings, we start by studying the architectural details and overall character of the area — whether it’s a youthful, dynamic neighborhood or one with a stronger historical influence.
From there, we aim to bring elements of the outside world into the interior, creating continuity between the building and its environment. Additionally, collaborating with local Portuguese artists is an essential part of our design philosophy. It’s a way of giving our residents a taste of local art and culture.

How did you incorporate the essence of the Santos neighbourhood into the design?

By incorporating the blue of the building’s facade and the calming tones of the Tejo River into the interiors –  using these shades in fabrics and materials like the upholstery and kitchen elements. We also integrated Portuguese details, such as tiles in the furniture pieces and pele de tigre stone. And to capture the youthful, energetic vibe of Santos, we used dynamic patterns in the fabrics and other design elements throughout the space.

The house features a thoughtfully curated selection of art. Where are they from?

The artwork in the Abrantes 48 House includes a special piece by Farinha Rosa, a talented Portuguese artist duo, placed in each apartment. We are committed to supporting and showcasing local artists, and it’s always a pleasure to collaborate with new talent. For us, it’s not only about celebrating Portuguese art but also contributing to the local economy and giving our residents a deeper connection to the culture around them.
