“After seven years of living in Lisbon, I’ve discovered the kinds of places that truly capture the city’s essence — charming, authentic, and a little bit magical. When friends come to visit, I love taking them beyond the obvious and showing them the real Lisbon. These are my favorite hidden gems — the ones that make me fall in love with the city again and again.”

First up is Luvaria Ulisses in Chiado — Lisbon’s tiniest boutique, and one of its most elegant. This glove shop, no wider than a doorway, is a piece of living history. The gloves are handmade in Portugal, the styles are timeless, and there’s even a touch of ritual when you try them on — the staff gently slide them onto your hand with talcum powder. It’s chic, quirky, and utterly unforgettable.
For tea lovers, Companhia Portugueza do Chá, tucked away in the Santos neighborhood, is a hidden treasure. This isn’t a tea room, but a beautifully designed boutique filled with the scent of fine teas. The all-black interior with pale wood floors is striking, and the team is incredibly knowledgeable. Whether you’re looking for something comforting or energizing, they’ll help you find your perfect blend.

And when it’s time to eat, I always recommend Taberna Sal Grosso in Alfama. It’s a cozy, bustling tasca run by a young, passionate team. The food is fresh, flavorful, and deeply Portuguese. It’s loud, it’s lively, it’s local — and yes, you absolutely need to book ahead.
Or if I’m in the mood for a laid-back yet delicious dinner, Bar Alimentar is one of my go-to spots. It’s all about great music, a relaxed atmosphere, and honest, flavour-packed food. Launched by a group of cool, creative Portuguese minds, it feels like a neighborhood secret — and the friendly, on-point service makes it even better. Always a good vibe, always a good plate.
When the Lisbon sun gets intense, I head to Gelato Davvero Rio Tejo, their riverside spot in Alfama. Their artisan ice cream are delicious and, to me, the best of Portugal! Lavender and Portuguese basil are my favorites. Best of all, you can enjoy your gelato while watching the boats drift along the Tagus. A perfect summer moment.

These are the places I go back to time and time again — my authentic Lisbon. I hope you love them as much as I do.
